Walk into any new luxury apartment or hotel bathroom and you'll probably see a wall hung commode: a sleek bowl that seems to float above the floor, with just a flush plate on the wall. It's one of the simplest ways to make a bathroom look modern and premium.
But it's also installed differently from a regular floor-standing toilet. Here's what you need to know before you choose one.
What is a wall hung commode?
A wall hung (or wall mounted) commode is fixed to the wall instead of standing on the floor. The flush tank, called a concealed cistern, sits hidden inside the wall on a strong metal frame. All you see is the bowl and a flush plate.
Why homeowners choose wall hung
- Easy to clean: the floor underneath is completely clear, so you can mop right to the wall. No hard-to-reach corners around a pedestal.
- Looks bigger and more modern: visible floor makes a small bathroom feel more spacious.
- Hygienic: fewer joints and surfaces where dirt collects, especially with a rimless bowl.
- Height you choose: the bowl height is set during installation, so it can suit your family.
- Quiet: the cistern inside the wall makes refilling quieter.
What installation needs
This is the most important part: a wall hung commode must be planned before tiling.
- Concealed cistern with frame: fixed to the floor and wall, it carries the commode's weight and holds the flush tank.
- Drain connection at the wall: the waste pipe comes out of the wall behind the bowl.
- Water inlet for the cistern, inside the wall.
- Flush plate: mounted on the wall and doubling as the access panel for the cistern, so it can be serviced without breaking tiles.
The frame usually sits in a slightly thicker wall section or a built-out "false wall". Share your chosen model's dimensions with your plumber early so the frame, drain and water point are placed correctly. Check each product page for what's included with the commode.
Renovating an existing bathroom? Converting from a floor-standing toilet means moving the drain to the wall and building in the frame. It's very doable during a renovation; just budget for the plumbing work.
Is a wall hung commode strong enough?
Yes, when installed properly. The weight is carried by the concealed steel frame, which is anchored to the floor and the wall, not by the tiles. Use a good-quality frame and an experienced plumber, and the commode will be completely solid.
Why rimless?
Traditional toilets have a curved rim under the top edge, where water flows from, and also where dirt and germs hide out of sight. A rimless bowl has an open edge, so water flushes around a smooth surface and every part can be wiped clean. Every Cromio commode is wall hung and rimless.
Size and spacing
Cromio wall hung commodes measure roughly 490–520 mm by 360–390 mm, so they fit comfortably in compact apartment bathrooms. For comfortable use:
- Keep the centre of the bowl at least 380–400 mm from a side wall or basin.
- Leave about 600 mm of clear space in front.
- Plan the flush plate where it's easy to reach, usually centred above the bowl.
Colour: not just white
A wall hung commode is a design piece. Matte black, gold, cream, pastel green, indigo, cocoa brown and forest green commodes can match your basin and tiles for a coordinated, hotel-style look. Glazed colours are fired into the ceramic, so they don't fade with normal cleaning.
Checklist before you buy
- Your bathroom can take a concealed cistern and frame (new build or renovation).
- The drain and water points can be placed at the wall.
- The commode's dimensions fit with the spacing above.
- You've chosen a flush plate finish that matches your taps.
- Your plumber has seen the product dimensions before tiling starts.

Frequently asked questions
What is needed to install a wall hung commode?
A concealed cistern with a support frame built into the wall, a drain connection and water inlet at the wall, and a flush plate. It should be planned before tiling.
Is a wall hung commode better than a floor-mounted one?
It is easier to clean underneath, makes the bathroom look larger and more modern, and its height can be set during installation. It needs more planning because the cistern is built into the wall.
Can a wall hung commode be installed in an old bathroom?
Yes, during a renovation. The drain is moved to the wall and the concealed frame is built in, often in a slightly thicker false wall. Budget for this plumbing work.
How much weight can a wall hung commode hold?
When installed on a good-quality concealed frame anchored to the floor and wall, a wall hung commode comfortably supports everyday adult use. Correct installation by an experienced plumber is key.
