You walk into a showroom to pick a wash basin for your new bathroom. The one you like is ₹15,000. Online, a premium basin of the same quality, design and finish can cost half that.

So what does the extra money in the showroom buy you? A better basin, or something else?

Cromio was built as a premium sanitaryware brand around exactly that question: why should luxury cost so much more than it needs to? Here's the honest answer.

The short answer

When you buy sanitaryware the traditional way, a big share of the price pays for the journey the product takes to reach you, not for the product. The basin travels from factory to brand, then to a distributor, a dealer and a showroom. Each step adds its own margin. Then the brand adds national TV ads, celebrity endorsements and showroom rent on top.

None of that makes the basin hold water better.

Where your money goes: a ₹15,000 basin, broken down

Every brand's numbers are different, but this is roughly how the cost of a typical basin sold through the traditional dealer-and-showroom network builds up:

Where the money goesWhat it pays forAdds roughly
Making the productClay, glaze, firing, quality checks, packagingThe base cost
Brand marginHead office, R&D, profitSignificant
AdvertisingTV, print, celebrity endorsements, cricket sponsorshipsSignificant
Distributor marginWarehousing and supplying dealers in each region8–15%
Dealer / retailer marginShowroom rent, staff, credit to contractors15–30%
Discount bufferMRP is set high so "30% off" still leaves a profitVaries

Ranges are typical industry estimates and vary by brand and city.

Add those layers together and the manufacturing cost of the basin can be a small fraction of the MRP. That's how the same type of product can sell for two or three times its cost.

"Doesn't a higher price mean better quality?"

Not automatically.

Here's what many buyers don't know: a large share of sanitaryware made worldwide comes out of a small number of large ceramic manufacturing clusters, including Morbi in Gujarat and major factories abroad. Brands of every size, big and small, often source from the same kind of factories, with the same kilns, glazes and processes.

What really decides quality is:

  • The body material: properly fired vitreous china or ceramic absorbs very little water, so it resists stains and cracks.
  • The glaze: a good glaze is smooth, even and free of pinholes. Run your finger over it.
  • Firing temperature and quality control: these decide whether the basin warps, crazes or chips.
  • For faucets, the metal and cartridge: solid brass bodies and a good ceramic cartridge mean no drips for years.

A high price tag doesn't guarantee any of these. Materials, specifications and quality checks do, and that's what a premium brand should stand for.

Four costs that don't improve your bathroom

1. The showroom

Prime-location showrooms with dozens of display bathrooms are expensive to run, and that rent is built into every product sold there.

2. The middlemen

Distributor → dealer → sub-dealer → plumber or contractor commission. Every hand the product passes through takes a cut. Contractor commissions in particular are common in this industry, and buyers rarely see them.

3. Advertising

Celebrity faces and prime-time TV slots are paid for by every customer, one basin at a time.

4. The "MRP game"

Sanitaryware is famous for deep "discounts". If a dealer can give you 35% off without blinking, the MRP was never the real price.

How buying direct changes the maths

A premium brand that sells direct online removes most of those layers. There's no distributor, no dealer, no showroom rent and no contractor commission. The product goes from our warehouse to your door.

That's the model Cromio is built on: premium design and quality, sold direct, so luxury becomes affordable. A few real examples from our range:

Prices at the time of writing. Check the product page for the current price.

We'd rather spend that money on better finishes, careful packaging and fair prices than on billboards.

Buying online? How to judge quality without touching the product

The biggest worry about buying sanitaryware online is "I can't see it before I buy." That's fair. Use this checklist with any brand, including us:

  1. Read the full specifications. You want exact dimensions in mm, the material (ceramic, vitreous china, solid surface or brass), the finish, and the tap-hole and overflow details. Vague listings are a red flag.
  2. Look at real customer photos and reviews, not just studio images.
  3. Check the warranty in writing. How many years, and what does it cover: glaze, cracks, the cartridge?
  4. Read the return and damage policy. Ceramic can break in transit. A good seller packs it properly and replaces breakage quickly.
  5. Ask questions before you buy. A brand that answers quickly on WhatsApp or by phone will usually support you after the sale too.
  6. Check compatibility. Make sure your basin mixer suits the basin height (tall mixers for table top basins), and that your commode suits your bathroom's drain and water points.
  7. Compare like with like. Match size, material and finish, then compare prices.

Cromio's policies are public: Warranty · Shipping · Returns & Refunds

So, is showroom sanitaryware a waste of money?

Not always. Established showroom brands offer a wide dealer network and decades of track record, and some people value that.

But if you're paying 2–3x for the same type of product made by the same kind of process, you should know what the extra money buys. Most of the time it pays for the supply chain and the advertising, not for a better basin.

Luxury made affordable. That's the whole idea behind Cromio: a premium sanitaryware brand, without the showroom markup.

Frequently asked questions

Why is sanitaryware so expensive in India?

Mostly because of distribution. Products usually pass through a brand, distributor, dealer and showroom, and each adds a margin. Advertising and showroom costs are added too, so the MRP ends up well above the cost of making the product.

Is it safe to buy wash basins and commodes online?

Yes, if the seller gives full specifications, safe packaging, a written warranty and a clear replacement policy for transit damage. Check reviews and ask questions before ordering.

Is an affordable basin lower quality?

Not necessarily. Quality depends on the material, glaze, firing and quality control. A premium brand that sells direct, like Cromio, can offer the same quality for less because there are fewer middlemen.

What should I check when buying a wash basin?

Check the exact dimensions, material, finish, tap-hole and overflow, whether it suits your mixer, the warranty, and the return policy for damage in transit.

Does Cromio deliver all over India?

Yes. Cromio ships across India. Orders are usually processed within 24 hours, and standard delivery takes 3–7 business days depending on your location.
